Furniture Cab is a low-cost, efficient delivery service dedicated to supporting a circular economy in furniture.
Furniture Cab’s mission is to make it easier for people to acquire and transport large furniture items without the high costs typically associated with van hire. By promoting the re-use and re-sale of furniture, they contribute to environmental sustainability and foster a sense of community.
Furniture Cab was born from a need. Care experienced young people are awarded £2,000 to furnish their first permanent home, however, the home often needs decoration, carpets, window coverings, as well as furniture. The £2,000 is often enough for flooring and white goods, meaning that other furniture needs to be sourced at a low cost or free. When the team sourced this furniture online in support of these young people, they found that there wasn't a fast and affordable way to transport it, meaning that they often missed out.
Funding from Postcode Innovation Trust, thanks to players of People's Postcode Lottery, will be used to purchase an Electric Van to replace their current leased diesel van. The electric van will be better for the environment emitting fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants. They will also rent a storage unit, where they will be able to store furniture as it is donated. They will employ a part time marketing person, to increase partnerships with corporations. Finally, funding will be used to run four annual workshops to support young people to learn basic handyman skills, such as assembling flat pack furniture, upcycling furniture, and carrying out small renovations.
